Folville Junior School

English

Reading is a strength at Folville, as demonstrated by our wonderful outcomes for children at the end of Year 6. As you walk through the school, you will see every child with a high-quality book in hand. Our library is a central feature of the school, and you will regularly find children enjoying the process of selecting books and comparing authors. Reading is taught consistently across the school through guided reading and shared reading lessons. The Accelerated Reader program supports children in choosing closely matched texts that are both enjoyable and aid their progression.

For children who need additional support, we continue to develop their phonics skills in Year 3. We also use Lexia to help those who are not making the expected progress to catch up. Our children have a genuine love for books and enjoy discussing them with their peers. This passion for reading is evident in every corner of our school, making it a vibrant and engaging place for learning.

Our writing is taught through a structured and research-informed approach. Our methodology is grounded in best practices outlined in the English Research Review by Ofsted (2022), ensuring that our children develop strong foundational skills in both transcription and composition. We emphasise the importance of fluent handwriting, accurate spelling, and effective use of punctuation, which are essential for clear and coherent writing. Our curriculum also focusses on sentence construction, vocabulary development, and control of grammar, enabling pupils to express their ideas with precision and creativity.

We believe that fluent writing depends on a solid understanding of the spelling patterns which are taught discretely.  At Folville, we guide children through the writing process, from planning and drafting to revising and editing. This  approach helps children communicate their ideas orally before writing, ensuring that their written work is well-organised and meaningful.
